How is ADHD diagnosed?
Basic Facts About ADHD Diagnosis
- A diagnostic evaluation is the first step in managing ADHD.
- A qualified healthcare professional can provide a diagnostic evaluation to determine if a child, adolescent, or adult has ADHD.
- A diagnostic evaluation may be performed at any age. However, we do not encourage diagnostic testing for children younger than six years old.
- A comprehensive ADHD evaluation cannot be done just from brief office observations.
- A comprehensive ADHD evaluation cannot be done just by talking to the person.
- There is no single psychological, medical, or genetic test for ADHD.
A comprehensive diagnostic evaluation includes:
- A thorough diagnostic interview, including past and current functioning
- A comprehensive history (developmental, medical, academic, work, social, family)
- ADHD behavioral checklists based on DSM-5 criteria
- Standardized behavior rating scales for ADHD
- Standardized behavior rating scales for common co-existing conditions associated with ADHD
- Other types of psychological testing as deemed necessary by the clinician
- An intellectual assessment for students of any age to help determine areas of strengths and weaknesses and to provide more detailed information about the impact of ADHD on cognitive functioning
- Psychoeducational testing, as needed for individuals with concerns about academic development or learning disabilities
- Documentation of ADHD-related impairments necessary for requesting accommodations for standardized exams (ACT, SAT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, Licensing Exams, etc.)
- Review of past evaluations and school records

Therapy Services for ADHD Management
ADHD is a lifespan biological condition. Contrary to some popular stereotypes, most children with ADHD do not “grow out of it.” ADHD can be managed well at any age with an appropriate individualized treatment plan that meets the needs of the individual at that point in their life. Because every person with ADHD is a unique individual, every treatment plan must be uniquely designed for that person.
Psychotherapy and behavior therapy are helpful for most individuals with ADHD, particularly those who are newly diagnosed, whether or not the person takes ADHD medication. At ADHD Center, a primary focus is on developing behavioral strategies and coping skills, including improved organization, time management, effective planning, reducing procrastination, and improving efficiency and productivity.
For many individuals, psychotherapy is also helpful to treat common co-existing conditions such as anxiety and depression and to address family, marital, and relationship issues. Students with ADHD benefit from improving study skills and understanding what academic accommodations best fit their needs to promote academic success. Many adults with ADHD benefit from addressing job and career issues, including finding a career that best suits their interests and strengths.
